Depression - one of the largest problems in Lithuania
Depression is one of the biggest problems in Lithuania. Suicide rates in Lithuania are the third highest in all of the world. The largest amount of people who have depression are teenagers. And I was able to chat with a teenager named Veronica who suffers from depression.
As I asked her when did she start noticing her first signs of depression she told me: “I can’t tell when the first symptoms started, because they accompanied me since the 6th grade, but back then I didn’t take it seriously. I noticed something strange is happening to me when I was in the 10th grade. The signs of depression were that I separated myself from other people, I didn’t want to talk with others. Thiat wasn’t the ordinary me.”
She also told me that she was so called “sponge” because of inability to talk, tell her thoughts and share her feelings with other people: “I am one of those people who doesn’t like sharing my problems with others. Once, when I was attending a summer camp the leader of the camp gave me a nickname “sponge” because I drained everything in, but I couldn’t spill anything to others.” In her opinion, telling people her own problems is a pointless thing, because she doesn’t want and like loading other people with her own problems.
Depression leads to suicide, it is a fact, not a myth. I asked Veronica if she tried to hurt herself and she said yes, she tried. One of the things she didn’t like was her body. She had long and sharp nails and she tried to hurt herself at night while being in bed. Veronica also mentioned that she felt pain not only on the outside, but in the inside too. She felt spiritual pain and it was really difficult for her at that time, so she decided to hurt her body.
A lot of people do not ask help from professionals, but Veronica didn‘t hesitate and asked help from a psychotherapist, who gave a recipe for some antidepressants. They were not that strong because she was just 15 at that time, but she decided that she doesn‘t need them and she‘ll be okay without them. In her opinion, antidepressants are a drug which makes you lose all your feelings. It should help you forget your problems which attract depression, but it takes your imagination away. „Life is not only rainbows and sunshines, it‘s really hard“ – this qoute tells us that every person may have struggles in his life. She also mentioned that she didn‘t use those drugs she was assigned because she didn‘t want to become addicted to them.
I asked her how did your life change after you for sure knew that you were diagnosed with depression? She told me: “My evenings became sad, full of tears and the worst part about it was that I couldn‘t tell my problems to my family, my friends, what scares me, what are my problems, because I didn‘t know myself. I live in a world that I don‘t even know.“
Even tho she had this disease, there was no major difference in co-operating with other people. She told me that she is a perfect actor who hides her feelings and emotions. But as the time passed it was harder and harder to hide her feelings. She didn’t try to be cool and show her fake emotions, she was sad, but she was who she really is. Also, she has a lot of friends and when she is feeling mad, sad she tells her friends to not talk to her and that is how she escapes all conflicts.
As we all know depression is a disease which is not really cured and Veronica confirmed it. She told that the main point of getting out of depression is trying to know and love yourself. You need to work hard to make it possible, but in the end you can make it work. She is trying to find inner strenght to fight her inner demons and it is really hard, but she thinks that everything is possible.
By this day she tries to live now and not think about the future. Veronica also mentions that she tries to pay less attention to other people opinions especially the people she doesn’t know. “Till this day I try to love myself and the whole world”, –Veronica said. By the way, her main goals and wishes are that her closest friends and family would love and appreciate everything they have.
